Turning History, Food, Music, Art, and Storytelling into Successful Tourism Enterprises

African-American tourism is more than preserving history—it is an opportunity to create businesses, generate jobs, and build generational wealth. As travelers increasingly seek authentic cultural experiences, entrepreneurs across South Carolina are discovering that history, heritage, and creativity can become thriving tourism enterprises.

Opportunities exist in nearly every community. Transportation providers can offer shuttle services connecting visitors to museums, historic districts, festivals, and cultural attractions. Churches and faith-based organizations can open their historic sanctuaries for guided tours, concerts, weddings, reunions, conferences, and heritage events that celebrate their role in shaping local communities.

Entrepreneurs can also launch tour companies that highlight African-American history, architecture, Civil Rights landmarks, and Gullah Geechee culture. Food entrepreneurs can showcase regional cuisine through restaurants, food trucks, culinary tours, and cooking demonstrations. Artists, authors, historians, musicians, and makers can transform their talents into visitor experiences through galleries, performances, book signings, workshops, and cultural exhibits.

South Carolina's many farms and rural communities also present opportunities for agritourism operators to offer farm tours, heritage farming experiences, and locally produced food products. Festival organizers can create signature events that celebrate music, food, history, and culture while attracting visitors from across the region. Heritage interpreters and storytellers play a vital role in bringing history to life, ensuring that visitors leave with a deeper understanding of the people and places that shaped South Carolina.

To encourage innovation, the South Carolina African-American Tourism Council (SCAATC) is launching the Black Tourism Shark Tank, where entrepreneurs, nonprofits, and cultural organizations can pitch new tourism ideas for funding, technical assistance, marketing support, and mentorship. SCAATC also provides networking opportunities, conferences, product development assistance, educational workshops, and connections to funding resources that help transform ideas into sustainable businesses.

South Carolina's culture is one of its greatest economic assets. By turning history into experiences and heritage into opportunity, entrepreneurs can preserve our stories while creating prosperous businesses that strengthen communities for generations to come.
